Strategies[]

Try pairing the katana with a instant-damage animal (black spider, lynx, fox), as it is most deadly with these kinds of animals. If the enemy has a spear, try attacking then retreating. This will most likely cause them to heal or fall back, if not, land another hit by walking towards them and then backwards. If possible you can mount a one-time damage (recommend to use balance> animals since heavy pets makes it harder to push) pet and make a quick pet chase it (horse, deer, unicorn, reindeer is recommended as rabbits has low weight and won't affect much to the speed of pushed animal), the fast pet will push it making it faster (even faster when you mount the fast pet your own!) and negates the katana biggest weakness: speed.

Using the katana[]

The katana is a slow weapon, which makes the direction you move in very important, for you really cannot effectively retreat without a dash pet (horse, reindeer, unicorn etc). Pairing the katana with a shield can increase the katana user's defensive capabilities. When encountering a foe in a 1v1 situation, gauge their skill by repeatedly hitting them and then moving backwards. Watch how your enemy moves. If they rush you, you can either hold up a shield if you picked it, or quickly place double spikes and hit them with your katana from behind the spikes, which will likely kill the rusher if you are at a high age level. Think fast, and pick strategies according to what your enemy is doing, because escape is limited if you are outclassed.

In terms of leveling up, the katana is easy to level up with. Its high damage makes it very effective to kill animals and players with, and if one has a fast mount you can even offset its slow movement speed. If you are inclined to not PvP players at a low level, boss animals (animals with scars) are a good target and a decent supply of gold. Simply killing boss animals and players of lower levels can get you to max age rather quickly.

You have to be careful, however, about what pet you are mounting. Try not to mount large, slow pets, for they reduce your chances of escape in a dangerous situation. If it is crucial to your build that you mount a pet like this, try equipping a pet that is fast but not too light, such as the rabbit and its variants.

Against the katana[]

The katana is a long ranged, damage oriented weapon. As such, getting up close with axes or trying to use arrows are some of the most effective strategies. Katana players lose their advantage when their range is used against them; In addition, using swords will allow you to out damage them, though this requires getting close to them and hitting every hit.
