Age is essentially the player's level. At every level until and including age 27, you get to obtain and upgrade tools and structures. Farming any resource grants XP for aging up (by hitting a tree, rock, food and gold). You can also gain XP by killing animals or other players. However, some resource nodes will grant more XP when hitting them. As the player grows older, it becomes increasingly slower to get to the next age. Among different types of resources, chests, tumbleweeds and logs can grant XP the fastest.
The items you choose constitute what is essentially a tree. If you choose, for example, the Stone Sword at age 1, then you have chosen the swords' branch of the primary weapons. The diagrams to the right illustrate how every branch is formed.
Primary Weapons
The age tree containing all primary weapons.
The player starts out at age 0 with the Hand.
The first upgrade at age 1 is the primary weapon the player will be using, which can either be a sword, an axe, a hammer, a dagger, a spear or a glove.
At age 6, the player can choose whether to keep using the same type of primary weapon or a another with a slightly different specialization, depending on which weapon they first chose. For swords, it is the katana. For axes, it is the labrys. For hammers, it is the pickaxe. For daggers, it is the cleaver. For spears, it is the naginata. Gloves do not have such a counterpart.
At ages 11, 15 and 19, the weapon chosen keeps upgrading to, respectively, ruby, amethyst and sapphire tiers, and at age 22 they can choose between the amber, diamond and emerald cosmetic tiers.
Secondary Weapons
The age tree containing all secondary weapons.
At age 4, the player can choose 3 secondary weapons: the Stone Bow, the Stone Shield and the Stone Wrench.
At age 10, the bows' branch separates in four branches, those being the crossbow, the musket, the bow, and the minigun The shields' branch separates in two branches, those being the crystal shield and the defensive shield. For the wrenches' branch, the player may upgrade to a Golden Wrench.
For ages 14, 18 and 21, the weapon keeps upgrading to ruby, amethyst and sapphire respectively, and at age 24 becomes available the amber, diamond and emerald cosmetics.
Tools
The age tree containing all tools.
At age 5, the player can choose one of 4 items: the Appletor, the Slingshot, the Bug Net and the Saddle.
On age 25, the first 3 of them are upgraded to their golden tiers, which makes the tools better in their role. The saddle, on the other hand, has 5 upgrades, each of which focus on making a given pet attribute higher.
Food & Walls
An age tree containing food and walls.
The player starts out at age 0 with an Apple and a Wooden Wall.
At age 2, they can choose to upgrade either food or walls. In the case of the former, at age 7 they can choose three specializations of food: one that focuses on increasing defense, one that focuses on instant healing or one that focuses on healing over time, and in the case of the latter, they can choose the Golden Wall.
For ages 12 and 16, the player keeps upgrading their chosen items.
If the player chose at age 2 to upgrade walls, then at age 20 they will have to pick either their chosen building or walls to keep upgrading to sapphire level. Then, at age 23, they can apply either the amber, diamond or emerald cosmetic to their building.
Golden Food
During the April Fools event, the player can choose the Golden Cookie at age 2, which leads to a branch identical to the normal food, except that every item gives the exact opposite effect they normally would.
Pads
The age tree containing all pads.
At age 8, the player can choose one of 3 items: the Boost Pad, the Bear Trap and the Heal Pad. Then, at age 26, the player can choose either a bigger variant of the pad or a stronger variant of it.
Buildings
An age tree containing buildings, not including towers, walls or pads.
An age tree containing magic towers.
The player starts out at age 0 with a Wooden Door, a Wooden Spike and a Wooden Windmill.
At age 3, the player can choose to upgrade the door or the windmill to their stone version, spikes to the Big Stone Spike or the Stone Spike, or choose the Wooden Magic Tower or the Wooden Turret.
For ages 9, 13, 17, 20, 23 and (if the player chose a wooden variant) 27, the building will keep upgrading up until the cosmetics level. It is worth noting that, if the player chose the Stone Wall, then at age 20 they will have to either choose to upgrade either the wall or the building.
Sadly there is nothing higher than Age 27. Only the Old Wise Tamer achievement is possible after that when reaching age 100, and higher ages have no effect.
